Deck Products

There are many products and material options to consider when planning for your deck and new outdoor living space. We can help you determine whether to go real wood or a low-maintenance alternative as well as the types of distinctive finishes that will work best for your aplication and make your deck uniquely your own.

We have compiled some information on the products that we feel are the best out there and would highly recommend installing. If there are any other products you would want to use on your deck we would be happy to discuss your interests to ensure you get the outdoor living space of your dreams.

Decking Materials

Composites:

Composites offer a low-maintenance, high-durability solution for many of our customers decks and help in adding that high-quality look when completing any outdoor living space. Composites are also naturally a very green product as most are composed of reclaimed woods and plastics. If composite decking is the ideal material for you, we can usually find a great solution to your decking needs within the TimberTech®, Trex®, or CorrectDeck® product lines which all offer long-term limited warranties.

TimberTech®:

AK Design and Build is registered as an Elite Contractor for TimberTech® because we believe that TimberTech® is a great choice as a low-maintenance and high-durability composite decking. TimberTech® is a composite material that offers an amazing wide range of textures and color options with UV inhibiting pigments that resist color fading. For more information on available products through TimberTech® visit their website at www.TimberTech.com.

Trex®:

Trex® is one of the leading manufactures for composite materials and is another low-maintenance, high durability composite decking material. Trex® is another composite that we highly recommend and would be happy installing on any deck. For more information on available products through Trex® visit their website at www.Trex.com.

Fiberon®:

Fiberon® manufactures high quality, low-maintenance composite decking, railings, and fencing products. Fiberon® Outdoor Flooring and Horizon composite decking products are not only beautiful but are backed by the industry's first 20-Year Stain and Fade Resistant Warranty. As a FiberPro™ contractor, AK Design and Build highly recommends Fiberon® products - our most popular composite material that we install. For more information on available products through Fiberon® please visit their website at www.FiberonDecking.com.

PVC:

PVC decking is a relatively newer, but very comparable option to composites. The difference is that PVC decking is 100% plastic and considered to be an ultra low-maintenance option when compared to the composites that are composed of a mix of wood fibers and plastic. This difference creates a product that takes away some of the downsides of composites in that PVC decking is more resistive to fading, scratching, staining, and warping. The downside to the PVC decking is that it is the option that least looks like natural wood and has a much smaller selection as far as colors and textures.

Most composite manufactures are now carrying PVC options such as Trex Escapes®, TimberTech XLM®, and Fiberon Outdoor Flooring™.

Azek® manufactures exclusively PVC materials and offers a limited lifetime warranty.

Exotic Hardwoods:

Exotic hardwoods offer a beauty that is unmatched by any other decking choice. They include such lumber species as ipe, mahogany, cambara, tiger wood, and many others with an incredible variety of colors and textures.

Exotic hardwoods also offer a much greater hardness than traditional woods which leads to greater durability, better maintenance, and less splintering.

At AK Design and Build we only buy these hardwoods from green-conscientious distributers, meaning that the woods come only from selective and self-sustaining forests. Your new deck will be a breathtaking and alluring space when finished with an exotic hardwood such as the above pictured deck from www.Tigerdeck.com.

Railing Materials

Railings have branched into more than just a safety measure, but an artistic highlight to the uniqueness of any deck. As a customer, you can design a completely custom look that will make your deck stand out above and beyond.

With the modern options of low-maintenance composite railings all the way to unique exotic wood rails incorporating a horizontal cable rail; railings can go far an above the norm. Some options that we would be happy to discuss including
on your deck are:

  • composite railings

  • exotic woods

  • metal balusters

  • glass paneling

  • horizontal cable rail

  • timber & log rails

  • custom iron railings

Additional Deck Materials

Drainage Systems:

Drainage systems are a useful component to any deck to eliminate moisture getting below. These systems also provide a fantastic solution in creating a more comfortable outdoor space below elevated decks. Dry Joist by Wahoo Decks is a drainage system that we would be excited to discuss installing with your deck. We specifically recommend this product as it has a dual function of not only a deck drainage system, but as structural joists.

As stated on Wahoo Decks website, www.WahooDecks.com:
"DryJoist was named ‘One of the 50 Most Innovative Products for 2008’ by Professional Remodeler Magazine. Unlike traditional wooden deck joists, DryJoist is the first and only structural deck drainage system - meaning the deck’s surface boards are supported by the same structural design that creates a 100% dry area below. hence the name - DryJoist."

Lighting:

Adding lights to any deck creates a beautiful accent to the living space adding not only ambiance for evening entertaining, but added safety as well.

For your deck you can either choose from low voltage or high voltage lighting. Low voltage lighting works as an accent and is run on a transformer that can either be set up to turn on with a light sensor or by timer. High voltage lighting, works like any other light in your home and can be connected to an operable switch inside your home.

Columns:

Another beautiful addition to any deck are custom stone, brick, or sided columns that add the look of strength and elegance to your new outdoor living space.

Columns can be made in many different sizes and shapes and finished to precisely match the exterior of your home.
